Twenty-two Santa Clara University undergraduate students have been awarded the Jean Donovan Fellowship for Summer 2021. Each Fellow will work in a volunteer capacity over 180 hours at community-based and/or non-profit organizations to support essential work virtually and/or in-person for 6 weeks during the summer. Fellows participated in a Spring Formation process and will meet for reflective conversations in small groups concurrent with their summer volunteer work. Reflective practices rooted in the Ignatian tradition are an essential element of the Fellowship and Fellows will write and share about their experiences in this blog. A stipend of $2500 is awarded to Fellow. For more information about the Fellowship, please visit the Ignatian Center’s Jean Donovan Fellowship webpage.

This fall six Jean Donovan Fellows will continue working with their placement through the quarter while continuing to deepen in their personal commitment to social justice. Fellows will work 5 hours/week virtually and/or in-person through the fall quarter with a community-based and/or non-profit organization. JDF will meet biweekly as a small group of Fellows with mentorship from the Ignatian Center staff to support Fellows’ intellectual and spiritual integration of their experiences. Fellows will continue to post a couple of blog entries to share more about their work and reflections with the larger SCU community.

The Jean Donovan Summer Fellowship is named in honor of Jean Donovan, an American woman who lived, worked, and died in solidarity with communities of El Salvador facing oppression in the 1980s. The Donovan Fellowship is designed to encourage and support undergraduate students who desire to deepen their understanding of social justice issues through a summer community-based learning experience.
